For the Patties
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 large egg
- ½ cup panko breadcrumbs
- 2 tablespoons A1 steak sauce
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 tablespoon homemade steak seasoning
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
For Cooking
- 1 tablespoon butter (for cooking patties)
- 3 tablespoons butter (for gravy)
- 1 medium onion, sliced thin
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 ½ cups beef broth (or stock)
- Salt and freshly cracked pepper (to taste)
- 8 oz sliced baby Bella mushrooms
- Prepare the patties: In a medium bowl, combine ground beef, egg, panko breadcrumbs, A1 steak sauce, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, steak seasoning, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix thoroughly using your hands, then form the mixture into 4 round patties, each about ¾ to 1 inch thick.
- Cook the patties: Heat 1 tablespoon butter in a medium skillet over medium heat. Once melted, add the patties and cook for 5 minutes on each side until fully cooked through. Remove patties from skillet and place on a plate; cover with foil or a lid to keep warm.
- Prepare the skillet for gravy: If excess grease remains from cooking the patties, spoon off all but about 1 tablespoon. Do not clean the skillet to retain the flavorful pan drippings.
- Sauté onions: Add 3 tablespoons butter to the skillet and scrape the bottom to loosen browned bits. Add sliced onions and cook for 5 minutes until translucent.
- Create the roux: Stir in the flour with the butter and onions. Cook for about 2 minutes until the flour is lightly browned, stirring constantly.
- Add broth and thicken gravy: Gradually pour in the beef broth while stirring, making sure to combine it well with the flour mixture. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring frequently, until the gravy thickens. Season to taste with salt and freshly cracked pepper.
- Simmer with mushrooms and patties: Add sliced mushrooms and the cooked patties back into the skillet. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 7 to 10 minutes until the mushrooms are tender and the gravy is thick.
- Serve: Present the Salisbury steak with gravy over mashed potatoes, rice, or alongside your favorite vegetables. Warm bread is also recommended to enjoy with the gravy.
Notes
- Homemade steak seasoning adds a personalized flavor; store-bought seasoning blends can be used as a substitute.
- Ensure not to discard all the grease from cooking the patties as it adds richness to the gravy.
- Use fresh sliced mushrooms, but baby Bella or cremini mushrooms work best for flavor.
- For a thicker gravy, cook a bit longer or add a slurry of flour and water if needed.
- This dish pairs well with creamy mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
