Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 large yellow onion
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 large egg

Dipping Sauce

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon prepared horseradish
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prepare for baking the onion.
  2. Prepare the Onion: Peel the onion and trim about 1/2 inch off the top, leaving the root end intact. Place the onion root-side up on a cutting board.
  3. Cut the Onion: Carefully make 12-16 evenly spaced cuts from the top towards the root, stopping just before the root to create individual petals that stay connected at the base.
  4. Separate Petals: Gently open and loosen the onion petals so that they spread out resembling a blooming flower.
  5. Mix Dry Coating: In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, paprika, garlic powder, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and black pepper, mixing well to create the seasoned flour mixture.
  6. Mix Wet Coating: In another shallow bowl, whisk together the milk and egg until fully combined.
  7. Dip the Onion: Submerge the onion into the milk and egg mixture thoroughly coating all the petals. Allow excess to drip off.
  8. Dredge in Flour Mixture: Transfer the onion to the seasoned flour mixture, coating all petals completely. Shake off any excess flour gently.
  9. Arrange on Baking Sheet: Place the coated onion on the prepared baking sheet and drizzle olive oil evenly over it to promote browning and crispiness during baking.
  10. Bake the Onion: Bake for 30-40 minutes until the onion is tender inside and golden brown with slightly crispy petal edges.
  11. Prepare Dipping Sauce: While baking, whisk together mayonnaise, ketchup, horseradish, paprika, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper in a small bowl until smooth.
  12. Serve: Once baked, serve the blooming onion immediately alongside the prepared dipping sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • The cayenne pepper in the coating and dipping sauce is optional and can be adjusted to your heat preference.
  • Make sure not to cut through the root of the onion so the petals remain attached.
  • Using olive oil for drizzling helps achieve a crispy exterior without deep frying.
  • This dish is best served fresh out of the oven for optimal crispiness.
  • You can substitute milk with any plant-based milk to make it dairy-free.
