Cookie Dough
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup brown sugar
- ½ cup sugar
- 1 (3.5 oz) butterscotch pudding mix
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 3 Tbsp cocoa powder
- 1 Tbsp corn starch
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
Decorations
- Mini M&M’s sorted into green, yellow, red, and blue
- 10 oz package Hershey’s kisses, unwrapped
- Preheat oven and prepare baking sheet: Set the oven temperature to 350°F (175°C). Line your baking sheets with parchment paper to prevent sticking and for easy cleanup.
- Cream butter and sugars: In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine softened unsalted butter, brown sugar, and white sugar. Beat together until the mixture is smooth, creamy, and well combined.
- Add wet ingredients: Mix in the eggs one at a time, then add the butterscotch pudding mix and vanilla extract. Continue mixing until fully incorporated.
- Incorporate dry ingredients: Add flour, cocoa powder, corn starch, baking soda, and salt to the wet ingredients. Mix thoroughly, scraping down the sides of the bowl to ensure even mixing, until a uniform dough forms.
- Scoop dough balls: Using a small ice cream scoop or tablespoon, portion dough into 1-inch balls. Place each dough ball onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them appropriately.
- Create indentation and add M&M’s: Press your finger gently into the center of each dough ball to create a small well. Fill the indentation with 3-4 mini M&M’s of varied colors (green, yellow, red, blue).
- Enclose M&M’s in dough: Carefully roll the dough around the M&M’s, sealing them inside the dough ball so that candies are hidden within.
- Bake the cookies: Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 7 minutes, or until the edges of the cookies are set and the center is no longer glossy but still soft.
- Add Hershey’s kisses: Immediately after removing cookies from the oven, press a single Hershey’s kiss onto the top of each warm cookie.
- Decorate with facial features: After 5 minutes, once the kiss is softened by the heat of the cookie, use a toothpick to draw the eyes and mouth of the Sorting Hat on each Hershey’s kiss, adding a whimsical touch.
- Cool completely: Allow cookies to cool for about one hour on the baking sheet or wire rack, giving time for the chocolate to set and solidify before serving or storing.
Notes
- To prevent spreading, ensure the dough is chilled slightly before baking if your kitchen is warm.
- Different brands of pudding mix may slightly affect the texture; butterscotch flavor is key for authenticity.
- Use parchment paper or silicone mats for easy cookie removal.
- Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
- For a gluten-free version, substitute the flour with a gluten-free all-purpose blend.
- If desired, use edible food markers instead of toothpicks to draw faces on the Hershey’s kisses for more precise decoration.
