Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Dairy

  • 1 lb ground hamburger, cooked and drained
  • 1 block cream cheese, softened (about 8 oz)
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded (for mixing)
  • 1.5 cups cheddar cheese, shredded (for topping)
  • 5 strips bacon, cooked crispy and chopped

Vegetables and Canned Goods

  • 10 oz can diced tomatoes, drained well (such as Rotel)
  • 15 oz can chili starter (such as Bush’s Chili Magic)
  • 1/2 medium white onion, diced
  • 2 green onions, diced (green and white parts)

Spices and Seasonings

  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 2 tsp brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 12 tsp hot sauce (Louisiana hot sauce recommended)

Serving

  • Frito’s Scoops for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare for baking the dip evenly.
  2. Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, cooked and drained ground hamburger, diced tomatoes, chili starter, diced white onion, garlic powder, chili powder, brown sugar, paprika, cumin, hot sauce, and 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese. Mix thoroughly until smooth and well combined. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  3. Prepare for Baking: Grease or butter a 10-inch oven-safe skillet (cast iron works best). Transfer the dip mixture into the skillet, spreading it evenly. Sprinkle the additional 1.5 cups shredded cheddar cheese over the top.
  4. Bake Initial Layer: Bake the dip in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes until the cheese melts and the dip begins to bubble around the edges.
  5. Add Bacon and Finish Baking: Remove the skillet from the oven. Sprinkle the chopped crispy bacon evenly over the melted cheese. Return the skillet to the oven and bake for another 3 to 4 minutes until bubbly and fully heated through.
  6. Garnish and Serve: Remove the dip from the oven and top with the diced green onions for a fresh bite. Serve the dip warm with Frito’s Scoops or your preferred tortilla chips.

Notes

  • Use a cast iron skillet for even heating and an attractive presentation.
  • You can adjust the hot sauce quantity based on your spice preference.
  • Drain the canned tomatoes well to prevent the dip from becoming watery.
  • For a vegetarian version, substitute ground meat with cooked lentils or textured vegetable protein (TVP).
  • Leftover dip can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated gently before serving.
