Classic buttery cookies with a soft, tender texture and a delicate vanilla flavor. These Butter Cookies are ideal for piping into elegant shapes, making them perfect for teatime or gifting during holidays.

Ingredients

Scale

Cookie Dough

  • 1 cup Unsalted butter, softened (use high-quality, name brand butter)
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 Large egg
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 2 cups All-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon Salt
  • 12 tablespoons Milk (any kind, adjust as needed for consistency)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper. Set aside.
  2. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large bowl or stand mixer, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar on medium-low speed until the mixture becomes light and fluffy, which usually takes around 3-5 minutes.
  3. Add Egg and Vanilla: Add the egg and vanilla extract to the creamed mixture and continue beating on medium-low speed until fully combined and smooth.
  4. Incorporate Dry Ingredients: Slowly add the all-purpose flour and salt to the wet mixture, mixing just until fully incorporated. Be careful not to overmix to keep the cookies tender.
  5. Adjust Consistency: Add milk one tablespoon at a time, using the minimum needed to achieve a piping-friendly consistency. The dough should be soft but firm enough to hold shape.
  6. Pipe Cookies: Transfer the dough to a piping bag and pipe small circles or desired shapes onto the prepared baking sheet. If desired, add sprinkles for decoration. Chill the baking sheets in the refrigerator for 20 to 30 minutes to help maintain shape during baking.
  7. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for about 10 minutes, or until the edges of the cookies start turning golden brown.
  8. Cool: Remove the cookies from the oven and allow them to cool completely on the baking sheet before serving.

Notes

  • Use high-quality unsalted butter for best flavor and texture.
  • Do not overmix once the flour is added to avoid tough cookies.
  • Chilling the dough on the baking sheet helps the cookies keep their shape and prevents spreading.
  • You can decorate the cookies with sprinkles before chilling for added color and fun.
  • Milk quantity can be adjusted based on dough consistency; add only as much as needed for piping.
