Ingredients

Scale

Beef Patties

  • 2 lbs Ground beef (80/20 blend for best flavor)
  • 1/2 cup Breadcrumbs (Plain or seasoned)
  • 1 Egg (Beaten)
  • 1 Onion (Finely diced)
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Black pepper

Gravy

  • 3 tbsp Butter (Salted or unsalted)
  • 3 tbsp All-purpose flour (For thickening gravy)
  • 2 cups Beef broth (Low sodium preferred)
  • 1 cup Heavy cream
  • 1 Onion (Sliced)
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Mix Patties: In a large bowl, gently combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, finely diced onion, salt, and black pepper until just mixed to avoid overworking the meat.
  2. Shape & Rest: Form the mixture into 6 to 8 oval-shaped patties and let them rest at room temperature while you prepare the gravy base.
  3. Brown Patties: Heat an oven-safe skillet over medium heat and brown the patties for 3 to 4 minutes on each side until golden brown. Remove the browned patties from the skillet and set them aside.
  4. Make Gravy: In the same skillet, melt the butter and sauté the sliced onions until softened and translucent. Stir in the flour and cook for 2 minutes to eliminate the raw flavor. Gradually whisk in the beef broth and heavy cream, then add garlic powder, stirring continuously until the gravy thickens and becomes smooth.
  5. Bake Casserole: Nestle the browned patties back into the skillet with the gravy, ensuring they are well-coated. Cover the skillet tightly with a lid or foil. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes, then remove the cover and bake uncovered for an additional 15 minutes to thicken the gravy further and allow patties to cook through.
  6. Rest & Serve: Remove the skillet from the oven and let the bake rest for 10 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld and the gravy to set slightly.

Notes

  • Use 80/20 ground beef for optimal flavor and juiciness in the patties.
  • Breadcrumbs can be plain or seasoned based on your preference.
  • For a thicker gravy, allow it to simmer a few extra minutes on the stovetop before baking if needed.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stovetop.
  • Use an oven-safe skillet to avoid transferring the patties to another dish before baking.
  • To make this dish lower in sodium, opt for low-sodium beef broth and reduce added salt.
