Churro Saltine Toffee is a deliciously addictive treat that combines the salty crunch of saltine crackers with a rich, buttery toffee layer, melted semi-sweet chocolate, and a cinnamon sugar topping reminiscent of churros. Finished with a sprinkle of sea salt, this easy-to-make dessert fuses sweet and salty flavors in a crispy, decadent treat perfect for snack time or sharing at gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

Base Layer

  • 40 saltine crackers (enough to cover a standard baking sheet)

Toffee Mixture

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar

Topping

  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt (or to taste)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven and prepare baking sheet: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to prevent sticking.
  2. Arrange saltine crackers: Lay saltine crackers in a single, tight layer covering the entire baking sheet, ensuring the crackers touch but do not overlap.
  3. Melt butter and sugar: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter. Once melted, stir in the brown sugar and bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring constantly for about 3 minutes until smooth and bubbly.
  4. Pour toffee over crackers and bake: Immediately pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the arranged saltine crackers, spreading if necessary to coat all crackers. Bake in the preheated oven for 5 to 7 minutes, until the mixture is bubbly and caramelized.
  5. Add chocolate chips: Remove the baking sheet from the oven. While the toffee is still hot, sprinkle the semi-sweet chocolate chips evenly over the top. Let stand for 2 to 3 minutes until the chocolate melts.
  6. Sprinkle cinnamon sugar and sea salt: In a small bowl, combine granulated sugar and ground cinnamon. Sprinkle this evenly over the melted chocolate. Finally, lightly sprinkle sea salt over the entire sheet for a perfect balance of flavors.
  7. Cool and break into pieces: Allow the toffee to cool completely at room temperature until the chocolate hardens and the toffee sets, about 1 to 2 hours. Once cooled, break into bite-sized pieces and serve.

Notes

  • Use parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to make removing the toffee easier.
  • For a different twist, try dark chocolate chips or white chocolate instead of semi-sweet.
  • Store leftover toffee in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
  • Be careful when handling the hot toffee mixture to avoid burns.
  • If you prefer less saltiness, reduce the sea salt sprinkle to your liking.
